Where We Come From, Where We’re Going

Good food and good friends . . . essential elements that connect us to place.

Good food and good friends . . . essential elements that connect us to place.

If you follow nuovastoria, you already know that there has been a long, dry spell between posts. There isn’t a compelling reason that kept me away from the keyboard like, for example, sudden paralysis or irreversible computer failure. But there have been big changes afoot—changes that started small and became too big to ignore. Making sense of them has taken some time. Read more

The Heart of It

Extra virgin olive oil adorns this savory butternut and nut butter soup.

When we moved to Martina Franca for good, we knew what we would find. We’d been coming here for years and years, sometimes for a few months at a time. We knew our neighbors, where to buy mozzarella and which nearby beaches have the best sand and the shadiest parking. We chose this new life with our eyes wide open. Read more

Neighboring Alberobello’s trulli quarter is ready for Christmas.

Christmas is little more than a week away and our little town is hopping. From living nativity scenes that re-imagine village life at the time of Christ’s birth to the somewhat less charming Villagio di Babbo Natale  (Santa’s Village) in our town’s main square, our wintry air is charged with the electricity of the season. Big and Small

Cappuccio is enjoyed in Italy in the morning and only in the morning.

Friends and family ask us all the time “ . . . what are the biggest differences between living in Italy and the U.S.?” It’s hard to say. There are the obvious things that are attributable to expatriate life—the language, the lack of a wide web of friends and acquaintances built over a lifetime and the sometimes-puzzling infrastructure comes to mind. But it’s often the subtle, smaller moments that sneak up and let us know that we’re not in Kansas anymore. And that’s a good thing. Read more
